The castle of Serravalle began to have some strategic importance only after the mid-twelfth century, when the Municipality of Pistoia, gave start to build a fortification in place. It consisted of a fortress and another tower placed in a point still higher than the hill. Currently the fortress it remains the tower of Frederick Barbarossa. LA area experienced a period of splendour between the end of the twelfth century and the beginning of the thirteenth century, in which buildings were built monumental, becoming one of the main fortified villages throughout Tuscany.
